U.S. Soccer conducted the draw for the fourth round of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup on Thursday, and we now know what Los Angeles Football Club will do upon their entry in the competition.
LAFC will face Real Salt Lake on the road in the fourth round on June 11 at 7 pm PT at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The game comes in the middle of a nearly month-long break in league play for LAFC, so Bob Bradley should have close to a full-strength squad to choose from, minus the players away on international duty.
Should LAFC win over RSL in the fourth round, they would face the winner of the LA Galaxy-Orange County FC clash. Orange County FC is the NPSL team that knocked off USL Championship teams in succession — Orange County SC and Las Vegas Lights FC — and have already earned the prize for furthest advancement by an amateur side this year ($25,000). Perhaps they can continue the Cinderella run by slaying the Galaxy, but safe to say the Galaxy are huge favorites in that game.
So this means LAFC’s road in the Open Cup this year is much tougher than it was last year. Last season, they played two games against USL Championship teams (Fresno FC and Sacramento Republic) before taking on MLS teams in the quarterfinal and semifinal (Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo). On the bright side, LAFC have been the best team in MLS this season, but the margins for advancement are much smaller this season, and if you lose, you’re out. Hopefully LAFC can beat RSL, beat OCFC or the Galaxy (El Trafico in USOC!) and make another deep run in a tournament they clearly want.
