The United States enter the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup on Tuesday, when they host tournament debutant Guyana in Minnesota. Following the Group D opener between Panama and Trinidad & Tobago (4:30 pm PT, FS1, UniMás, UDN, Fox Sports Go), the USMNT jump in for their first competitive game of the Gregg Berhalter era.
They ended their tournament prep in dispiriting fashion, losing two successive friendlies, including a 1-0 loss to Jamaica, Berhalter’s first two losses. If you’re going to lose, friendlies are the games you can most afford to lose in, but the U.S. went from being comfortable co-favorites for this Gold Cup to the same old fears cropping up for the entire men’s program.
Two Los Angeles Football Club players are on the USMNT roster — defender Walker Zimmerman and goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Zimmerman might get some minutes, although Berhalter seems to think of him more as a backup option, while Miller is pretty comfortably No. 3 on the goalkeeper depth chart and a truly remarkable confluence of events would need to happen for him to get on the field.
Still, you never know. This is considered the easiest group stage game for the U.S. coming in, but it’s hard to get a beat on this team at the moment, so we’ll see how it goes.
How to Watch USA vs. Guyana: The game is scheduled to kick off around 7 pm PT on Tuesday at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minn. The game can be watched in the United States on FS1, UniMás, UDN and Fox Sports Go.
