LAFC to host Portland Timbers in 2019 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal

Teams to meet in same spot in tournament two years in a row.

Los Angeles Football Club defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 on Thursday in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, and they know who they’ll face in the next round, a familiar foe.

They will host the Portland Timbers in the quarterfinal round at Banc of California Stadium on Wednesday, July 10. The game will be the latest between the teams, who have met five times to date in competitive matches, with LAFC winning three, Portland winning one and the teams tying once. This season, LAFC have beaten the Timbers twice in league play, including a 3-2 barnburner in Portland earlier this month.

If this fixture sounds familiar to you, that’s because it is, as the teams met in the same exact round of the Open Cup last year. That was won by LAFC 3-2, but it was one of the most contentious games in recent Open Cup memory, with Portland protesting the eligibility of LAFC’s roster and a Timbers player accused of using a racial slur by Adama Diomande.

So these teams have plenty of bad blood and another elimination game showdown? Prepare for fireworks on July 10.
