Major League Soccer has been announcing the 2019 MLS-All Star starting XI this week, and two Los Angeles Football Club players, forward Carlos Vela and defender Walker Zimmerman, have been voted onto the team by the league’s fans.
It is the second selection and second consecutive All-Star honor for Vela, who was also voted the captain of the 2018 MLS All-Star team. Vela is the consensus MLS MVP frontrunner so far this season, leading the league in goals (16) and assists (10), with LAFC leading the Supporters’ Shield standings.
Zimmerman’s selection to the MLS All-Star Team is his first in his career. After playing his first five pro seasons with FC Dallas, he joined LAFC ahead of their inaugural season in 2018. So far this year he’s played 15 of LAFC’s 16 regular-season games, scoring one goal — a game-winner — while helping the defense improve substantially this season to date.
The 2019 MLS All-Star Game will be held in Orlando on July 31 against Atlético de Madrid. It’s possible more LAFC players will be picked to fill out the roster (I’d wager Mark-Anthony Kaye will get the nod from former coach James O’Connor), but with 24 teams, I’d guess it’ll be 1-3 more guys for LAFC. Time will tell, and congrats to Carlos and Walker!
