Women’s World Cup Update: The Knockout Round is here

Soccer: Womens World Cup-USA at Sweden Michael Chow-USA TODAY Sports

The Group Stage is over, and the knockout round now begins.

We had two knockout round games on Saturday, with Germany downing Nigeria 3-0, and Norway and Australia drawing 1-1, with Norway prevailing on penalty kicks.

The rest of the knockout round kicks into high gear in the days ahead.

England and Cameroon play in the early game on Sunday, and maybe the marquee game in knockout round, France plays Brazil at 12 pm PT.

The US plays Spain on Monday morning, while our neighbors to the north, Canada, take on Sweden on Monday afternoon.

Finally on Tuesday Italy plays China, and the Netherlands play Japan to round off the knockout rounds.

Knockout round drama is always fun, and this tournament is as wide open as one that I can remember. The US have played very well so far, and Germany has rounded into form, but beyond them there are probably 3 or 4 other teams who could conceivably win this tournament.

Enjoy the games, and we’ll see you before the quarterfinals.
