Great LAFC moments in El Trafico history

There have already been a lot of important moments in this short but fierce rivalry. Let’s look back and enjoy

It’s here, El Trafico, the already fierce rivalry between Los Angeles Football Club and the Carson Galaxy.

This game is the talk of the town in LA, and the animosity and disdain between the teams and fanbases has built up fast after a first year of memorable encounters between the two teams. So what moments stand out in this rivalry between LAFC and their out of town foes? Let’s look back and examine the best from LAFC so far.

Carlos Vela penalty levels the score against the Galaxy in the 3rd matchup of the season

The first two matches in this rivalry had been wide open fun encounters that flowed and were generally exciting to watch.

The third match was much more tense, with both teams quiet on the scoresheet, but fierce on the pitch. The Galaxy scored first, Zlatan Ibrahimovic poking the ball just past the line, which was confirmed after review by VAR.

LAFC fought back in the second half, and Carlos Vela brilliantly won a penalty, forcing Perry Kitchen to bring him down in the box. Then, Vela stepped up to the spot.

This goal evened the score in this match, and pushed LAFC into the ascendency, and helped them secure a hard fought point on the road against the Galaxy.

Carlos Vela scores a sweet header and Lee Nguyen scores a great free kick in the first derby at Banc of California stadium

The first game vs the Galaxy at Banc of California Stadium was a rockin’ affair. The 3252 and the other LAFC fans were hyped, and they were rewarded for their energy just seven minutes in, when Adama Diomande sent in a perfect cross for Carlos Vela to head in for the lead.

Later in the 20th minute of the match, after an unfortunate injury to Mark-Anthony Kaye, Lee Nguyen converted the free kick for his first ever goal for LAFC. And what a time to get it for the veteran midfielder.

This helped LAFC build a 2-0 lead at home over the LA Galaxy, and capped off a first half that was dominant by the Black-and-Gold.

Tyler Miller has an incredible save on Ola Kamara in the second half

LAFC were fighting off a Galaxy rally in the second half of the second match between the teams, and a cross made its way to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the box.

He laid the ball across to Ola Kamara for what seemed like it would be a sure goal for the Norwegian.

And then Tyler Miller sprang into action.

Miller had a stellar first season with LAFC, and had many good performances. The very first game against his old team, the Seattle Sounders comes to mind. But you’d be hard pressed to find a better save that Miller made all season than the one he made on Kamara.

Carlos Vela scores a stunner, and LAFC get the first 3 goals in the first game vs the Galaxy

So far Carlos Vela has scored in every game against the Galaxy, but the best goal he’s scored against them was unquestionably the first.

This was an incredible strike just 5 minutes into the match, and a Vela curler from the top of the box with his left foot would be Carlos Vela’s trademark type of goal in his first season in MLS.

20 minutes later, Vela scored again, in what was only a slightly less impressive goal then the first one.

LAFC then went up 3-0 in the 48th minute as former LAFC striker Marco Urena forced an own goal from a Galaxy defender.

Unfortunately, and in a strange coincidence, all footage of this match from after the 48th minute has been lost. Guess we’ll never know what happened the rest of the game.

Oh well, it’s better to look forward than dwell on the past anyway. What memories could LAFC make to add to this rivalry? Tune in to ESPN on Friday night at 7 pm to find out!
