With the transfer window heating up around the world, comes a new high-profile transfer rumor. Italy-based writer Gianluca Di Marzio reported on Thursday on his website that Fiorentina were “considering the idea of buying” Los Angeles Football Club forward Diego Rossi.
Rossi has 12 league goals this year, matching his league total from last season already, and he’s a fixture in the lineup for the black-and-gold. The 21-year-old Uruguayan is considered one of the best European prospects in MLS at the moment.
Fiorentina are coming off a disappointing season, finishing 16th in Serie A last season, three points above relegation, but things may be looking up. The club was recently bought by Rocco Commisso, who currently owns the New York Cosmos and appears to be eager to pour his passions (and money) into a big project. The club also has seen the return of manager Vincenzo Montella, who had a good spell previously there, including two fourth-place finishes in the league.
The wording of Di Marzio’s report seems to indicate the interest is rather preliminary at this point. Rossi has previously been linked to Russian Premier League club Krasnodar earlier this summer, and with all due respect to them, Fiorentina is a bigger club with a higher profile.
But the big question is if Fiorentina or Krasnodar or anyone would be willing to pay LAFC’s asking price, which I expect will not be cheap. Rossi is a key player for LAFC, and while the ownership will unquestionably look to sell him, they’ll want to maximize the balance between getting the most out of his time here and getting the most money they can for him. I think at this point this is a plausible transfer rumor, but I’ll be looking out for any kind of corroboration stateside before I think this is actually in motion. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.
For reference from the other side, here’s SB Nation’s Fiorentina blog Viola Nation’s writeup on the rumor. They seem really excited about this.
