Carlos Vela added to his MVP campaign on Sunday with a goal and two assists in the win over the New York Red Bulls.
In doing so, Vela scored his 37th career goal, surpassing former Chivas USA striker Erick “Cubo” Torres for most MLS goals by a Mexican player. Luis Silva, Giovani dos Santos, and Cuahtemoc Blanco round out the top 5 of that list.
This is only Vela’s 2nd season, which shows how prolific a goal scorer he has been since joining the league.
And with players like Vela and Jonathan dos Santos starring in MLS, maybe this will make MLS more of a destination for talented Mexican stars to play in.
Carlos Vela is also still on pace to break Josef Martinez’s single-season goal scoring record of 31 goals.
Given everything he has done so far, would you bet against Carlos Vela getting that record?
