Carlos Vela breaks MLS single-season goals & assists record

LAFC star has had most productive season ever.

Los Angeles Football Club star Carlos Vela scored the winning goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake, a second-half penalty when the black-and-gold were down a man.

He also wrote his name in the record books.

Vela has notched 24 goals and 15 assists in league play this season, and his combined 39 goals and assists puts him ahead of the previous leader in that category in MLS history, Sebastian Giovinco in his 2015 season for Toronto FC.

It’s a sign of how impressive his season has been, as Vela has tallied that in just 24 games. With nine more games to go in the league season, he’s still got a shot to break the single-season scoring record, set last year by Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez, with 31 goals. Of course, Martinez is mounting a charge at this year’s Golden Boot, too, so Vela has competition to keep him going. We’ll see if he’ll add that record to his haul when all is said and done.
