Could the deal be done this time?

The last dispatch of the transfer saga surrounding Los Angeles Football Club, Uruguayan power Peñarol, and young attacker Brian Rodriguez featured Peñarol staff and Rodriguez’s agent sniping in the press at each other over the situation.

With a weekend passing, it seems the water is smoother now, at least according to Peñarol executives, with club director Evaristo Gonzalez telling Sport 890 in Uruguay on Sunday that the deal was not yet complete but he projected it would be done within 48 hours.

This was backed up by a Uruguayan journalist, who said he expected Rodriguez to travel to the U.S. on Wednesday to completely finalize the deal after the teams reached a final agreement.

Time is of the essence here, with the MLS transfer window closing on Wednesday night. There is still time to get everything squared away, but we previously heard Peñarol officials publicly declare the deal was done before and then they had to backtrack. There’s been no reports stateside on the deal of late, but we at Angels on Parade have heard the interest was genuine on LAFC’s part. We’ll see if a deal is indeed officially announced in the coming days.

Update: Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times reported on Twitter after this article was first published that a deal was nearly done and he expected the transfer to be finished.
