The summer transfer window closed in MLS on Wednesday, but Los Angeles Football Club don’t appear to be done with roster additions, as they are expected to sign Ecuadorian defender Diego Palacios from S.D. Aucas.
The signing was first reported by a Barcelona-based ESPN reporter on Thursday:
Sorpresón de mercado: @SomosLAFC está listo para levantarle al @FCBarcelona_es el fichaje del lateral zurdo ecuatoriano Diego Palacios. Pagan mucho por él. Fichaje top para la @futbolMLS...— moisESPN (@moillorens) August 8, 2019
Translation: Market surprise: LAFC are ready to swoop in ahead of Barcelona to sign Ecuadorian left back Diego Palacios. They paid a lot for him. Top signing for MLS.
The 20-year-old has been a hot commodity on the transfer market this window. Starting his career in his native country with Aucas and spending a stint on loan at Dutch club Willem II, Palacios has drawn interest from both FC Barcelona and in the Netherlands. Earlier this week, sources in both Spain and South America claimed Palacios’ deal with Barcelona was done, and he would begin play for Barcelona B. But that deal was not completed.
The original reports abroad concerning Palacios to LAFC were corroborated closer to home, with The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio reporting a league source confirmed a deal was made before yesterday’s deadline.
League source confirms Palacios did indeed sign with LAFC on a TAM deal before the close of the window last night. LAFC awaiting the ITC.— Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) August 8, 2019

Angels on Parade also understands a deal has been made and Palacios is set to become an LAFC player.
In addition to his club experience, Palacios is also an Ecuador U-20 international, having featured in the recent U-20 World Cup in Poland, where Ecuador beat the USMNT and Uruguay, featuring new LAFC signing Brian Rodriguez, on their way to a third-place finish. Palacios featured in all seven games in that tournament. Palacios also has one senior cap for Ecuador to date.
While LAFC have yet to confirm a deal has been made, the sourcing, coupled with our reporting, indicates this is a legit story and we expect it to be announced. Palacios is a left back, in some respects a position of need, albeit not necessarily immediately. Jordan Harvey has been terrific this season, but at 35 his days as a regular starter are almost certainly coming to an end. Mohamed El-Munir is also on the squad, but after recently having a facial fracture during a game, it’s unclear how long he’ll be out. Still, if Palacios is added, he’ll most likely be joining with an eye to compete for a starting spot in the future, perhaps as soon as 2020, if this guy is as good as he’s touted to be. We’ll keep you posted on developments as we find out more.
