Carlos Vela tied the MLS single-season scoring record on Sunday, as he scored the opening goal in Los Angeles Football Club’s match against Minnesota United at Allianz Field.
The goal, in the 70th minute, gave LAFC the lead and Vela his 31st goal in league play in 2019. That goal ties him with Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez in 2018.

The FS1 broadcast noted the left-footed finish, Vela’s trademark, has accounted for 27 of those 31 goals this season.
Vela has tied the record, and has one more game to break the record outright. He’s also not necessarily assured of getting the Golden Boot, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic sits just two goals behind him with one game to play. Vela has already broken the combined goals and assists in a season record in MLS, and he’s in the driver’s seat to take the Golden Boot, but he could rewrite the record books for good as well in the season finale next week. Stay tuned!
