Major League Soccer revealed the top 10 of their annual “22 Under 22” list on Thursday, and for the third year running, the list had Los Angeles Football Club representation on it.
Rodriguez moved up from his ranking in 2019, which was No. 4, with club and country teammate Diego Rossi taking No. 1 honors last year.
Rodriguez, 20, has been a fixture in LAFC’s lineup since joining midseason in 2019. This year, he has two goals and seven assists in 15 MLS regular season appearances. His assists number put him at fourth in the league overall so far this year, and while many will grumble about only scoring two goals in regular season play to date, he’s already a regular for Uruguay’s national team and has already scored three goals at senior level, his chance creation numbers are legit, and he is unquestionably one of the biggest Europe-bound prospects playing in MLS right now.
Does Rodriguez have more growth to reach his ultimate potential? Yes, unquestionably, but show me a 20-year-old international who is fully formed. I think Rodriguez’s game isn’t perfect, but the flaws we may see watching him week in and week out should probably be mitigated a bit by his level relative to the league and the production he is providing.
At any rate, congrats to Brian, and keep up the good work.
