Orange County SC will close out the 2020 USL Championship season Saturday night as they face Las Vegas Lights FC on the road in the regular season finale.
This game doesn’t carry a ton of meaning for OCSC, as they were eliminated from playoff contention following a loss to LA Galaxy II midweek, that game serving as a playoff qualifier, essentially. It’s a disappointing conclusion to a promising campaign for Orange County, but with Group B being absolutely stacked and only two of five teams advancing to the playoffs, there was always the risk it could happen if OCSC slipped up. And lately, they did just that.
Still, there’s a game on tap and I expect some of the younger players may get a look in this one, to give them some minutes and perhaps for a few guys to show what they can do as the club decides what to do with the roster in the offseason. Even with no playoffs on the horizon, I expect OCSC to be motivated in this game.
They’ll take on a Las Vegas team that is also eliminated from the postseason, with the sudden coaching change from Eric Wynalda to Frank Yallop just before the season restart proving to be a bridge too far. Having said that, Las Vegas have looked decent lately and even though they are winless in five, they are also going to want to finish the season with a win, especially at home.
So this will be an interesting game, and we’ll see if Orange County can pick up a few more points before they head into the offseason.
Tale of the Tape:
Orange County SC: 21 points (6-6-3); Goal Difference:-2; Last five games: L-L-W-L-L
Las Vegas Lights: 11 points (2-8-5), Goal Difference: -8; Last five games: T-T-L-L-L
