It’s official: Diego Rossi has won the 2020 MLS Golden Boot.
With 14 goals in 19 games in 2020, the Los Angeles Football Club forward became the top scorer for the season, beating Raul Ruidiaz, Gyasi Zardes and Robert Beric by two goals.
Rossi, 22, actually scored more goals in league play in 2019, 16, but with LAFC playing 12 fewer games the scoring rate this season was substantially better for the Uruguayan. And with Carlos Vela hurt or unavailable most of the season, Rossi took the mantle of being the main scoring option for LAFC and thrived, continuing his development in his third season with the club.
Rossi’s Golden Boot makes him the second consecutive LAFC player to win the MLS Golden Boot, after Vela scored 34 goals in 2019, which broke the MLS single-season scoring record.

But with Vela missing much of the campaign, and with prior Golden Boot contenders like Josef Martinez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hurt the whole season or out of MLS entirely, the door was open for Rossi and he walked right through it. Congratulations to Diego, you truly deserve this one.
