Orange County SC announced Friday their latest signing of the offseason, with the addition of midfielder Mikko Kuningas for the 2021 season.
The 23-year-old joins Orange County after his career to date has entirely been played in his native Finland.
“Mikko is a highly rated, energetic and tenacious box to box midfielder. He will bring a tremendous amount of experience having played regularly in the Finnish Premier League at such a young age. I’m really excited to begin working with him,” said OCSC head coach Braeden Cloutier in a team statement.
Kuningas started his career with Lahti in 2015, winning a League Cup a year later. In 2017, he moved to fellow Veikkausliiga side FC Inter Turku in 2017, winning a domestic cup and qualifying for Europa League action after the 2019 season. This year, he returned to Lahti for another stint.
A former Finnish youth international, Kuningas most recently featured at the U-21 level for his country.
“It’s a pleasure to sign for Orange County SC. I’m super excited for this opportunity and I can’t wait to join the team so we can start our preparation for the upcoming season,” said Kuningas.
This is an intriguing signing. Kuningas is quite young, and I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen him play before, so he’s a bit of a mystery. But OCSC have had some big hits in terms of European signings in recent years, most notably Thomas Enevoldsen. If Kuningas can settle in quickly and adapt to life in the U.S. and USL Championship, he could be an impact addition to the squad.
Kuningas is the third new signing for Orange County this offseason, joining Chris Wehan and Brent Richards.
