LAFC’s Diego Palacios wins Concacaf Champions League Young Player award

Defender had tremendous run through competition.

LAFC couldn’t get over the line to win the 2020 Concacaf Champions League, falling 2-1 Tuesday in the final against Tigres UANL.

Still, it was a terrific run for the black-and-gold, and one of their players took an individual player award at the end of the tournament, with defender Diego Palacios winning the Young Player award for the 2020 Champions League competition.

Palacios started in all five of LAFC’s games in the tournament, and was particularly good in the final three games, all played in single-leg rounds in Orlando, the Ecuadorian left back a force from his spot.

What made the award somewhat remarkable is that Palacios was initially a doubt to play in the final three games. The player’s wife is pregnant and prior to LAFC’s trip to Orlando, there were concerns she was about to go into labor, so he stayed behind. But he flew separately to arrive for the quarterfinal game against Cruz Azul, and for LAFC, his presence was huge.

Here’s hoping all is well with his wife and he can savor this award, even if the outcome of the match is what he wanted. Congrats to Chiqui.
