Bradley Wright-Phillips signs with Columbus Crew SC

We figured he wasn’t returning to LAFC, but now it’s official.

Well, it’s official: Bradley Wright-Phillips has a new club.

The veteran striker officially signed with Columbus Crew SC, the news announced Wednesday. That, of course, closes the door on his time with LAFC once and for all.

To be fair, it looked likely BWP would not be returning to LAFC, after the club declined his contract option for 2021, and the player subsequently opted out of playing in the Concacaf Champions League restart after that news dropped. Head coach Bob Bradley never spoke specifically about Wright-Phillips opting out of CCL play, but he alluded to the roster decisions needing to be made before CCL came back putting a wrinkle in the team’s plans.

BWP played 21 games in 2020 for LAFC, his only season at the club, scoring nine goals and seven assists. The Englishman was voted 2020 MLS Comeback Player of the Year off the back of his campaign with the black-and-gold.

Now, he’s on to the black and yellow of Columbus. I really liked him at LAFC, to be honest, and wish he got another season here, but it wasn’t meant to be. Happy trails to him and best of luck in the future.
