Los Angeles Football Club stars Eduard Atuesta and Eddie Segura started and played the full 90 in Colombia’s significant 1-1 draw against Brazil in South American Olympic qualifying on Monday. The game, the teams’ first of the final stage of qualifying, was a surprise considering Brazil are the defending World Cup champs and have been steamrolling through the tournament so far.
Taking points off Brazil is job No. 1, now Colombia need to pick up more points, against Uruguay and Argentina, to try and qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Here’s more news for this Tuesday:
- Uruguay fall to Argentina: Diego Rossi was suspended, while Francisco Ginella started, but Uruguay began the final stage of South American Olympic qualifying on Monday with a 3-2 loss to Argentina. The result was substantially better than what it could have been, as Argentina raced out to a 3-0 lead, before Uruguay pegged them back for two goals for a narrow loss in the end. The loss isn’t great for Uruguay’s hopes of reaching the Olympics, but they still have games against Brazil and Colombia to try and get a top-two finish in the tournament.
- LAFC CCL preview: Concacaf is producing a series of preview shows in English to gear up for the 2020 Concacaf Champions League, and this episode digs into the LAFC-Club Leon matchup. They break down the two teams in some depth.
- Christen Press’ golazo: The Concacaf Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament is also going on right now, and local gal Christen Press hit a total banger in Monday’s 6-0 win over Costa Rica to wrap up the group stage. The USWNT are coming to Carson for the knockout stage on Friday.
Take a bow Christen Press!!!

- LAFC Slammer called up: U.S. Soccer is holding a regional training ID camp for the U.S. U-14 Girls National Team, and LAFC Slammers goalkeeper Chloe Walls was among the players called up. The camp will take place this week in Chula Vista. Congrats to Chloe and good luck.
Today’s question: The CCL kicks off for LAFC in two weeks! Can you believe it? Let’s talk about preparedness for the new competition and whatever else strikes your fancy in the comments below!
