Portland Thorns FC v Chicago Red Stars

Pro first-tier team sports return to the United States Saturday morning, when the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup kicks off in Utah.

The tournament will pit eight of the league’s nine teams (more on that in a moment) in a tournament format in Utah. Preliminary games for seeding purposes will lead into a knockout phase to determine the winner of the league in 2020.

The ninth team in the league, the Orlando Pride, had a combination of positive and inconclusive test results for coronavirus earlier this week such that they ruled themselves out of the tournament altogether. Somewhat remarkably, the rest of the league will press on, and Orlando will look to be back in action in 2021.

The games kick off Saturday, with four teams in action. The curtain-raiser will come at 9:30 am PT, as defending champion North Carolina Courage takes on a new-look Portland Thorns side. This game will be aired in the United States on CBS — yes, the big CBS, that your grandparents watch all the time.

Then, after you’ve gone about your day, Saturday’s doubleheader will be wrapped in the evening with a clash between the Chicago Red Stars and Washington Spirit. This game will kick off at 7 pm PT and be streamed in the United States on CBS All Access, the streaming platform for the network.

After that, the next set of games will come Tuesday, with Houston Dash vs. Utah Royals FC at 9:30 am PT on CBS All Access, before OL Reign will take on Sky Blue FC at 7 pm PT on CBS All Access.

If you’re looking for soccer, you want to support women’s sports, you’re curious about the NWSL or some combination of those things, now’s a great time to get into it. Beyond the U.S. Women’s National Team stars, there’s far more compelling players, storylines and intrigue and it should be an interesting competition. Be sure to check it out.
