The group stage is over at the MLS is Back Tournament, and now Los Angeles Football Club know who they will play in the Round of 16.
It’s a familiar opponent in the Seattle Sounders, with the teams set to play Monday at 8 pm PT on FS1 and TUDN.
The last time these teams met, it was the biggest meeting yet, as Seattle beat LAFC in the Western Conference final at The Banc to progress to MLS Cup, which they hosted and won. Prior to that fateful night, LAFC had not previously lost to the Sounders.
The matchup comes because LAFC drew the Portland Timbers 2-2 Thursday in the group-stage finale. Had LAFC held on to win a game they were leading 2-1, they would have won the group over Portland and gone on to face FC Cincinnati. All things considered, they’d probably much rather face Cincy, but that’s not happening.
On the flipside, not to look too far ahead, but if LAFC can beat Seattle in the Round of 16, they would face the winner of the Orlando City-Montreal Impact clash. Not to take anything away from them, but LAFC would likely like their chances against either of those teams.
At any rate, Sounders it is. If LAFC beat them Monday, they’re in the quarterfinals. If they lose, they’re out of the tournament. Buckle up, the business end of this competition is here.
