Orange County SC announced Friday they have brought in veteran forward Chandler Hoffman on loan from fellow USL Championship side Birmingham Legion for the rest of the 2020 season.
Hoffman, 29, is a journeyman at this point in his career, but has a pedigree in this division, as he is currently the third-highest scoring player in USL Championship history.
It’s a homecoming of sorts, as Hoffman — while a native of Birmingham, Alabama — played college soccer at UCLA and spent two years early in his pro career in the LA Galaxy organization.
Drafted 13th overall in the 2012 MLS Draft by the Philadelphia Union, Hoffman has played for them, the Harrisburg City Islanders, LA Galaxy, LA Galaxy II, Houston Dynamo, Colorado Springs Switchbacks, Louisville City, Real Monarchs and Birmingham Legion to date. Hoffman’s most successful stretch is one Orange County fans are doubtless familiar with, playing for Real Monarchs in 2017-18 and scoring 28 goals in 65 appearances.
“I’m very excited that we have added Chandler to our roster,” said OCSC head coach Braeden Cloutier in a team statement. “He is a proven goal scorer and will complement the players that we already have.”
Expect Hoffman to rotate up top alongside Thomas Enevoldsen and Sean Ugo Okoli. With most of OCSC’s scheduled 15 games coming up to come on short rest, having multiple starting-caliber strikers should bolster Orange County’s hopes of reaching the playoffs this season.
