It’s been two and a half weeks since Orange County SC played a game, due to coronavirus positive tests elsewhere around the state of California in the USL Championship, and I don’t want to overpromise since you truly never know what will happen these days, but OCSC are scheduled to be back on the field and playing Wednesday night when they face San Diego Loyal.
It will be the first meeting between the teams, as San Diego is a new club and Orange County have only played two opponents total this season so far. Managed by Landon Donovan, it hasn’t been perfect but San Diego have an experienced roster and have started out very well, currently sitting second in the teams’ shared group. It’s safe to say they are absolutely competitive and will be a good test for every opponent, including Orange County.
Braeden Cloutier’s team have had to wait since the last two matches were postponed. This time around, the road trip is not nearly as long and punishing, but there has to be concern about Orange County SC’s rhythm after getting over two weeks off. They’re coming off a big win over Phoenix Rising, but will that carry over, or will they be starting from square one yet again this year?
One thing to note: While San Diego have played twice as many games as Orange County so far, both teams have been dealing with coronavirus-related postponements of late, so the uncertainty and futility of getting up for a game that’s not going to happen in the moment is familiar to both clubs at this point. Hopefully there are no positives ahead of this one, and they can get back in action.
Tale of the Tape:
Orange County SC: 5 points (1-0-2); Goal Difference: +1; Last three games: W-D-D
San Diego Loyal: 11 points (3-1-2), Goal Difference: +2; Last five games: D-W-L-W-W
How to Watch San Diego Loyal vs. Orange County SC: The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 pm PT at Torero Stadium in San Diego. You can watch the stream on ESPN+ throughout the United States.
