MLS announced the next phase of the 2020 regular season Saturday, with all teams getting a six-game regionalized slate of games to be played this month and in September, before the league hopes to continue regular season play through Decision Day on Nov. 8.
So Los Angeles Football Club’s next six games are on tap, and they include two (2) rivalry games against LA Galaxy, so don’t overdose on the rivalry vibes here. Here’s the upcoming schedule:
- Saturday, Aug. 22: LAFC vs. Galaxy (at Banc of California Stadium)
- Wednesday, Aug. 26: Real Salt Lake vs. LAFC (at Rio Tinto Stadium)
- Sunday, Aug. 30: Seattle Sounders vs. LAFC (at CenturyLink Field)
- Wednesday, Sept. 2: LAFC vs. San Jose Earthquakes (at The Banc)
- Sunday, Sept. 6: Galaxy vs. LAFC (at Dignity Health Sports Park)
- Sunday, Sept. 13: LAFC vs. Portland Timbers (at The Banc)

So teams will be trying to travel in isolated circumstances and try to spend as little time as possible away from home, and according to a team release: “Teams will take chartered flights, and for the majority of road trips will arrive in the host market on matchday and depart after the match later that evening.”
The club indicated the first game will definitely be without fans but the possibility remains open that some fans could be allowed into stadiums moving forward. I think in California, it seems unlikely that fans will be allowed in this year, but who knows at this point. Also, it certainly doesn’t make sense to allow fans in from a public health perspective, but it’s all a risk, I suppose, so we’ll see if anything changes on that front moving forward. We’ll also have to see if this new phase of playing outside a bubble, will work, given that coronavirus outbreaks have hobbled the USL Championship schedule in recent weeks.
So mark your calendars, and now we have a new phase of the season to look forward to, and very soon!
