Orange County SC announced this week forward Thomas Enevoldsen has been loaned to Danish club Hobro IK for the rest of 2020.
The news confirms something widely rumored, as Enevoldsen had returned to his native Denmark to be present for the birth of his child this summer and there appeared to be no timetable on his return. In normal times, OCSC would normally expect him to return in a matter of weeks as long as there were no complications, but with the coronavirus pandemic still raging, particularly in the United States, the prospect of coming back to the U.S., plus long delays in processing travel and immigration paperwork, means Enevoldsen’s return may not have been in the cards in the short-term.
“We are pleased to announce the loan deal for Thomas to Hobro IK, a top Danish club, where he can combine his talents and be with his young family,” said OCSC President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss in a team statement. “Thomas is a first class professional and arguably the most prolific goal scorer in the USL who is missed on our team in this challenging season. We are looking forward to welcoming Thomas and his family back to Orange County next season after a successful loan spell.”
Enevoldsen’s absence is a loss for Orange County SC, as he only played a game with the club this year upon his return after a year away. The experienced scorer is one of the best in the USL Championship, and his leadership and fiery demeanor helped set the tone during a stellar 2018 season at the club.
Having said that, OCSC’s depth means even if Enevoldsen’s loss is not insignificant, they may not see a big dropoff. The club has added experienced scorers Ugo Okoli and Chandler Hoffman this season, to join the likes of tweener attackers Darwin Jones and Kevin Coleman. And with just one loss on the season so far, Braeden Cloutier has been able to push on with the squad even in Enevoldsen’s absence.
By the way, Enevoldsen hit the ground running at Hobro, as he scored a brace Wednesday in his debut.
OCSC made a joke about recalling the marksman after the game.
In his first game for Hobro IK (@hikfodbold), @Enevoldsen87 scored two goals in the first half to help them advance to the next round in the Danish Cup. In related news, Orange County SC has decided they made a mistake allowing Thomas to go out on loan and has recalled him— Orange County SC (@orangecountysc) September 3, 2020
So congratulations to Thomas on the new arrival, and best of luck the rest of the year at Hobro.
