LAFC stayed local for their first selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, selecting forward Danny Trejo from Cal State Northridge with the No. 14 overall pick.
No, not that Danny Trejo. The soccer player featured for three years at CSUN, capping it off with a 2019 Big West Offensive Player of the Year award, scoring nine goals and seven assists in 19 matches that season. He did not play college soccer this past fall because NCAA soccer was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A native of Mendota, who played high school soccer, Trejo was expected to be a first-round pick in Thursday’s draft, and LAFC kept it local in taking him. It will be interesting to see if he gets an invitation to training camp, and if he does, if he’ll earn a contract from there. But as a tricky attacking player, if he’s at the level, maybe he can make some noise with the black-and-gold.
