We’re now in the final year before Angel City FC is scheduled to take the field for the first time, but now we have a concrete date for one of many important dates for the club, as NWSL announced Wednesday they have set the expansion draft ahead of the 2022 season for Dec. 16.
That expansion draft will be held for both Angel City FC and the second announced expansion team, launching in Sacramento (name yet to be announced). They’ll likely have to flip a coin or something to figure out who picks first in this one.
The most recent expansion draft in the NWSL took place in December for 2021’s new team, Racing Louisville FC. They had the ability to pick up to 18 players, a staggering number that is unlikely to be replicated with two teams in this next expansion draft. In the end, Racing selected 14 players, including the rights to Tobin Heath and Christen Press, who are both playing for Manchester United right now. I know a lot of people want and/or expect Press to be playing in Los Angeles in 2022, but as of right now, there is no deal in place for that and Louisville holds her NWSL rights for now.
We’ll see what the details are for the expansion draft when we get closer to it, but it’s exciting to know the date is set for when we’ll see some of the first Angel City FC players.
