Orange County SC 2021 home opener scheduled for May 22 vs. Sac Republic

The uncertainty of what 2021 can bring has led to the USL Championship launching their upcoming season on a sliding scale, and on Tuesday we found out the home openers for all the teams participating this season. In the case of Orange County SC, they’ll open their home slate May 22 at Championship Soccer Stadium against Sacramento Republic FC.

While it’s possible OCSC’s season could start before that, with the overall season kicking off Apr. 24, they were not listed as the opponent on any other team’s home opener and they have preseason games scheduled up to May 8. We’ll have to see if they open play before May 22.

Orange County’s home opener is not the latest in the league, not by a long shot. That honor goes to expansion team Oakland Roots, who will open their own home slate on Juneteenth, Jun. 19.

It’s understandable under the circumstances, but expect the schedule in 2021 to be out of whack most of the way, with some teams getting started much earlier than others and some teams having multiple games in hand. Orange County will be in the middle of the pack, they expect to have fans in attendance from the opener, and hopefully we won’t see any coronavirus surges and schedules disrupted along the way.
