Orange County SC will open the home portion of their 2021 regular season slate on Saturday when they host Sacramento Republic FC at Orange County Great Park.
OCSC have one competitive game under their belts, a 1-0 loss at Tacoma Defiance last weekend. That was a game in which Orange County’s rust was evident, but they had some looks and good play by Tacoma and some bad luck sent them back down to Southern California with no points.
All is not lost, of course, but they’ll face a likely tougher test in Sac Republic, who are a perfect 2-for-2 to open the season, narrowly beating LA Galaxy II on the road in their season opener before downing Las Vegas Lights 3-1 at home. They’ve got an extra game under their belts, but they’ve started the season deliberately, too, with about 10 days between each of their games thus far this year.
Bad news for Orange County this week, as Adam Jahn and Seth Casiple were both ruled out for the rest of the season with injuries. I think both players were being counted on to be key contributors this year, so losing them is a blow, but it’s an immediate test to OCSC’s depth this season. On the flipside, they brought in rookie defender Avionne Flanagan on loan from FC Cincinnati this week, so we’ll see how he fits into Braeden Cloutier’s equation.
Can Orange County post their first result of the 2021 season in front of the local fans, or will Sac Republic rain on their parade? This is one of the games of the weekend, so don’t miss it.
Tale of the Tape:
Orange County SC: 0 points (0-1-0); Goal Difference: -1; Last game: L
Sacramento Republic: 6 points (2-0-0), Goal Difference: +3; Last two games: W-W
