Las Vegas Lights FC will kick off their 2021 USL Championship season on Wednesday with a meeting against LA Galaxy II in Carson, and ahead of the match the club announced two more signings on Monday, in forward Danny Trejo and winger Julian Gaines.
Trejo was LAFC’s first-round MLS SuperDraft pick, No. 14 overall, in January and featured for Vegas in preseason. That, coupled with no news on the Cal State Northridge product being signed by the MLS side, made it seem pretty likely he’ll start his pro career in the USL Championship ranks.
Given the fact that Las Vegas are LAFC’s reserve team, I think Trejo will be very motivated to impress and he should see plenty of playing time for the club this season under new head coach Steve Cherundolo.
Gaines, 18, turns professional as well, after playing one game at the USL Championship level, in 2019 for Austin Bold on an academy deal. A U.S. youth international at U-15 and U-17 level, the Austin native will look to turn heads as he embarks on his pro career.
The announced roster is up to 11 players now for Las Vegas, which, yes, is technically enough to play a game but bear in mind that there are two goalkeepers so one would have to play in the field. But seriously, there’s going to be LAFC players on loan who feature for Lights FC on Wednesday and maybe there will be another signing announcement or two in the meantime. Stay tuned.
